BDSM TaskForce

APA DIVISION 44

The American Psychological Association’s Division 44: BDSM Task Force

BDSM Task Force activities include:

Research * Education * Clinical Work * Advocacy

The field of BDSM Studies has experienced significant growth in recent years, with research exploring various aspects such as health, personality differences, identity formation, and community belonging.  Additionally, studies have found that LGBTQ+ individuals are more likely to disclose involvement in BDSM and kink. However, despite the increasing relevance and prevalence of these practices, stigma and discrimination persist, leading to barriers to healthcare access and contributing to elevated suicide risk among practitioners. Therefore, the BDSM Task Force will focus on research, education and training, psychological practice, public interest, and public awareness related to kink, leather, BDSM, fetish, and other forms of alternative sexualities and communities.
